Message from the Head of School

The holiday of Sukkot begins at sundown on Friday, October 2, 2009. A festive spirit permeated the campus this week in preparation for Sukkot, which has a dual significance: historical and agricultural.

Historically, it is a time of remembering the 40 years of wandering of the Israelites in the desert before entering the Promised Land. The Israelites lived in temporary shelters (huts) called Sukkot. Agriculturally, Sukkot is a harvest holiday. Occurring during the fall harvest season, the holiday also celebrates the season’s bounty.

Students in grades K-12 are looking forward to the joyous holiday. On Thursday, in eager anticipation of Sukkot, many students stopped by the school office to pick up their lulav and etrog. Lower school students helped to decorate our large sukkah near the Cypress Preserve, which is an annual tradition at DKJA. They added their own personal touches by placing their creative artwork inside. Next week, lower school and middle school students will enjoy festive lunches in the sukkah. For the first time this year, high school students built their sukkah on the main campus, where they now attend classes. The joyous spirit of Sukkot will continue throughout next week.

Please keep the momentum going and join us for the DKJA Family Sukkot Celebration sponsored by the PTO on Thursday, October 8, 2009 from from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Have A Joyous Holiday!
